Tech Company turns recycled iPhones and iPads into Art
Grand Rapids, MI | 17 September 2012 — When Jordan Notenbaum and his two high school friends started Genius Phone Repair in 2009, they never thought they would be a part of West Michigan’s newest high profile event. But, here they are, contenders in the Grand Rapids 2012 ArtPrize Competition.
“The 6-foot tall 3-D sculpture will have functionality including: Hands-free Siri access (jailbreak), working cameras, iCloud photo streaming, Siri activated Twitter and Facebook posting, and much more.”
Genius Phone Repair offers customers an alternative to using a carrier upgrade when a device is damaged. From smashed iPhone screens to water damaged iPods, The West Michigan consumer has finally found a place to repair their broken gadgets and stay up on the hottest items at prices that can’t be equaled anywhere else.
“Most consumers don’t realize they can get their phones repaired when they break them. We are trying to change that mindset.”
This summer, the owners of Genius are taking their craft one step further by creating an entry for the 2012 ArtPrize Competition. Rest assured, their art will be high-tech, innovative and different than that of any other artist. The art piece, dubbed “Destruction of Technology”, includes 10 live iPhones and 4 live iPads.
The 6-foot tall 3-D sculpture will have functionality including: Hands-free Siri access (jailbreak), working cameras, iCloud photo streaming, Siri activated Twitter and Facebook posting, and much more. Along with the great location they received - just inside the J.W. Marriott Lobby (235 Louis Campau Prominade NW), they are confident that they will draw attention, accolades and the all-important thumbs up vote from the public. The guys at Genius are trying to impress with over $500,000 of prize money on the line.
“We have been saving broken screens and backs from iPhones ever since we opened, with plans to recycle them. We never thought we would be building a giant iPhone out of them.”
